Finding Gold In The Dark

Have you ever thought what it's like to work in a mine?

My hubbie, Ian, worked for a mining company, mainly on the surface as a mechanical fitter but he also did underground training. Part of that training involved walking underground for 10kms in Wellington boots! Pitch black except for the tiny light on the leader's helmet.

No turning back, no escape and only one direction to go, down. The urge to panic at times was almost overwhelming.

The most precious gifts..

When you think about it, most of the world's most precious commodities are created and found in the dark;. diamonds, gold , coal, gemstones, pearls, and the most precious of all, a newly forming child.

Many of us go through dark times whether it be an illness, a loss, relationship breakdown, loss of childhood, financial and business failings or even a career that just doesn't unfold the way we dreamed and hoped.

How we handle these losses is paramount to our future and not just our future but also those whom we love or depend upon us.

I recently watch a video by Seth Godin and he said he had had more failures in his life than those viewers watching. All entrepreneurs talk about their many failures on the road to success.

People tell us there's light at the end of the tunnel but sometimes its so dark it can be hard to see the light.

We feel the panic and anxiety rise in our throats. We want to run when we need to just keep walking through.

Looking for the 'gold in the dark' can help us to survive and live to fight another day.

Look for the gold and rather than disguising the scars that life inflicts, celebrate them as something beautiful and a part of your journey...a survivor's story.

All these thoughts come to my mind as I've been creating a new focus in my artwork.

Combining my designs from the natural landscape, some techniques borrowed from both Japanese and Navajo Indian art, plus the healing aspect of art itself I will soon be releasing a whole new series of works that will have a unique and personal flavor....
